In Windows 2000 Professional English Version,
there is NO Japanese application installed.
Then, you may wonder why we can read and
write Japanese in it......Windows 2000 is
an operating system including a function
to activate almost all the major languages
in the world. The existing Professional English
Version even includes MS-IME2000, the newest
version of kanji converting program.
Furthremore, as Windows 2000 is the successor
of Windows NT, it is intended for multi-user
environment, which means that each user's
interface is individual after logging on,
and you may display Japanese fonts, while
the other users have a "purely"
English environment without even seeing IME
icon.
Of course, as most people don't use MS-IME2000,
it is not pre-installed in English version.
You have to set it up by yourself.
Like most instructions that Microsoft make
available, what you really want to know is
never officially mentioned, but the method
I've found is quite easy to follow.
Prepare Windows 2000 CD aside, make sure
if all the applications are closed, and then
print this page to follow the instruction.
- Open My Computer and then open Control Panel. If you find an icon (a globe) called Regional Options, double-click it.
- In General Tab, you would find Language Settings for the System. Then, find Japanese in the list and click ON in its check box. Follow the instruction
Insert Windows 2000's CD, then click Apply.
The window to suggest Reboot Windows would appear, click Yes and reboot.
- IME icon would appear on your Windows taskbar
(lower-right of your display). As the default
language is still English, the square icon
should be EN (English).
Click this icon, and choose Japanese. Then, a small pop-up menu would appear close
to IME icon. The topmost item indicates hiragana input, which is the default. You may change
it, whenever you have to input English alphabet
or katakana, by clicking this item.
- Now, you can type romanji, then to your surprise, hiragana will appear in any application of MS Office
2000, IE or Outlook Express!
Don't forget the Enter key after typing every word to confine, or hit
the Shift key to choose an appropriate kanji before confining. Everytime you hit Shift, a different kanji would be suggested.
